Teen seriously injured in texting while driving accident

A 16-year-old has recently suffered serious injuries in Des Moines in a car accident that was likely caused by texting and driving.

According to reports the two-vehicle accident happened on Oct. 5 at the intersection of Lacona Avenue and Southeast 14th Street. The 16-year-old driver was t-boned in his blue Chevrolet Cavalier by a pick-up truck. Off-duty Polk County Sheriff’s Office sergeant, Dan Charleston, happened to be in the area and responded to the scene of the accident. As Charleston peaked into the Cavalier, he found a young male driver clearly unconscious and with blood on his face. He then saw what likely caused this preventable crash: a cell phone on the driver’s lap with a half written text open on the screen.

The teenager who was believed to be in critical condition was transported to Mercy Hospital.
