What is precedent?

Precedent is also known as authority. The term is assigned to legal cases which establish a principle or rule that courts or other judicial bodies use subsequently in other cases with similar issues or facts. In other words, the outcome of a certain legal case can set a precedent for all other cases that come after it. These cases are then often cited during other legal trials in order to make a stronger case in court.
