CA Highway Patrol Officer Awarded $35M in Spinal Cord Injury Lawsuit

A jury in California returned a $35 million verdict in a lawsuit filed by a police officer who was paralyzed in a car accident in 2007.

According to court documents, California Highway Patrol officer Anthony Pedeferri was left paralyzed after he was struck by a car on Highway 101 near Faria Beach, California. The vehicle was driven by Jeremy White, of Paso Robles, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2008 for his role in the accident.

Pedeferri filed a civil lawsuit against White and the owners of Bert’s Mega Mall in Covina, from where White was returning from at the time of the accident. Employees of Bert’s strapped two motorcycles into White’s truck prior to the accident.

A Ventura County jury returned a $35 million verdict after a judge threw out a defense motion for a new trial.

Girl Injured in Iowa Motor Vehicle Accident

A girl in Le Mars was injured in an all-terrain vehicle crash Saturday night.

According to officials with the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the accident on Lake Avenue shortly after 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Deputies say two juvenile females had been riding an ATV in a corn stubble field, when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The ATV overturned and landed on top of both girls.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to Floyd Valley Hospital after the accident. She was later flown to Sioux Falls Hospital for treatment.

The passenger on the ATV was not injured in the accident.

The names of the girls have not been released.

Car dangles from bridge after crash in Iowa

A car crash in Hiawatha, Iowa on the Interstate 380 bridge caused one car to be left dangled off of the side of the bridge.

The accident occurred as the traffic was backed up on the east side of the bridge and a van waited to turn left through the traffic. One motorist paused to let the van fit through the gap in traffic in order to cross the lanes.

The issue arose when a vehicle in the outside lane did not see the van and they collided. The car the went over a concrete barrier and through a chain link fence before landing nose first in the snow after falling from the bridge. Fire crews had to attach a chain to the vehicle to pull it up while emergency crews worked to clear the lanes.

Elderly man killed in pedestrian accident

Des Moines police report that a 91-year-old man was struck and killed by a dump truck near the downtown area Monday morning around 8 AM.

The pedestrian-vehicle accident took place when the man was attempting to cross the road in his motorized wheelchair. According to the dump truck driver, he was making a right turn at the same time and struck the man, who he says he did not see.

Police are still investigating but no charges have been filed.
