Three people died in a medical helicopter crash in northern Iowa earlier this month.
The deceased included a helicopter pilot, identified as Gene Grell, a nurse named Shelly Lair-Langenbau, and a paramedic named Russel Piehl.
Med Trans Air CEO Fred Buttrell said the medical helicopter’s tracking system was in contact with the communications center but that there wasn’t any emergency notification before the accident occurred, and it was unclear if weather had been the cause of the crash. According to the National Weather Service the temperature during the crash was 27 degrees with northwest winds of about 10-15 mph. The crash is being looked into by both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
