Tires that are underinflated by more than 25 percent are three times more likely to cause a car accident than cars with the proper tire pressure, according to a recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The study involved data from crashes that took place during the 2005-2007 period. This time frame was chosen because vehicles produced during that time were not required to have automatic tire pressure systems. The results showed that cars with insufficient tire pressure were involved in more accidents than those that were inflated correctly.
The tire pressure monitoring systems are only meant to alert drivers that their tire pressure is low. It is still important to perform monthly tire pressure checks on all vehicles, regardless of the year that they were manufactured. This simple test can prevent several tire problems from occurring and may even save lives.
