Michael Alexander, 57, of Fort Madison, died Saturday at Fort Madison Community Hospital after being struck from behind by a truck while riding his bicycle on Highway 61 South. Wayde Youngquist, 48, of Montrose was the driver of the truck who hit Alexander. Alexander was riding in the outside lane when Youngquist’s truck, driving in the same lane, struck him from behind. He was rushed to Fort Madison Community Hospital where he later died of his injuries. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at King-Lynk Funeral Home at 2pm.

A woman was killed in an Iowa bicycle accident Tuesday morning.
According to officials with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, the bicycle rider was identified as 49 year-old Vera Lucia Ribeiro-Sulentic. Police say Ribeiro-Sulentic was riding her bicycle westbound on Old Highway 20/160th Street, about two miles east of Dike, shortly after 6:20 a.m. when the accident occurred. She was struck from behind by a westbound Jeep Liberty driven by 30 year-old Grundy Center-resident Dustin Hughson.
According to the accident report, Ribeiro-Sulentic was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Hughson was not injured in the crash. He was cited for steering unreasonably close to a bicyclist. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 18.
The bicycle accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. Dike Fire Department and Ambulance assisted at the scene.

The man responsible for the death of a Cedar Rapids bicyclist in a fatal accident last July turned himself in to authorities this week.
An arrest warrant was issued for the driver behind the hit-and-run after police could not locate him at several addresses. Cedar Rapids police say that the man turned himself in after his friend saw a news report about the warrant and told him about it.
He has been charged with failure to yield and having no insurance in his involvement in the July 29 accident. The crash occurred on C Street SW and left the woman cyclist with serious head injuries, from which she died four days later in hospital care.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, an accident with a truck near the city of Montezuma in central Iowa left a bicyclist from Oregon dead this Wednesday.
The 33-year-old bicyclist was pedaling on Iowa Highway 85 when the truck driver spotted him. The driver moved towards the center line to give the cyclist more room.
It was then that the truck’s front right tire failed, causing the truck to lurch to the right. It hit the cyclist, killing him instantly.

A 70-year-old man was riding his bicycle on a trail that crossed over the roadway around 4:20 p.m. when a 27-year-old man in a pickup truck struck him near Highway 52.
The 70-year-old man was killed from injuries sustained in the accident. It is unknown whether police officials have given any citation in the accident because it is still under investigation.
