Iowa sees increase in fatal crashes

Officials in the state of Iowa have said that the number of fatal accidents have increased this year and are attributing this to the change in the weather.

“This year has been different because we had a storm and then we don’t have snow for a month or two so they go back to their original driving conditions and they we get another storm and that when we see a lot of collisions because they don’t become adjusted for three months, You have a break in between,” said Sgt. Scott Bright with the Iowa State Patrol.

Officials have stated that many drivers are not realizing the danger in just a light layer of snow on the roadway. Officials have said that the second cause in an increase has been attributed to distracted driving.

Iowa State Patrol car involved in accident

Black ice may have been the cause for three accidents that occurred on Interstate 80, one involving a state patrol car. The accidents caused the traffic to build up on the highway.

According to Iowa State officials, the accidents occurred near West Branch. A state patrol officer’s car was hit while he was responding to another minor collision.

Before this collision, another accident occurred involving two vehicles in the left lane of the road and it caused the roadway to be blocked for some time. Black ice was spotted in the area and officials are urging drivers to be cautious while on the road. There were no major injuries in any of the accidents.
