1 injured in 15th Street Southwest crash

A two vehicle car crash occurred Friday morning at 15th Street, injuring one teenager.

According to reports from the Mason City Police, a pickup truck driven by 47-year-old Ronald Leerar of Clear Lake was heading westbound on 15th Street around 10 a.m. when he pulled in front of another car when attempting to turn left into a driveway at the Southport shopping center. In making this turn, an eastbound vehicle driven by 17-year-old Avarie Dana-Jensen struck the rear of Leerar’s pickup.

Dana-Jensen was rushed to Mercy Medical Center for injuries she sustained in the crash, police said. Information on her present condition is unavailable as of press time; however, her injuries are said to be non-life threatening.

Iowa highway fatalities connected to increase in speed limit

Since 2005, Iowa highway fatalities have risen by approximately 10 percent. In 2005, the overall speed limit for rural highways in the state was increased from 65 miles per hour to 70 miles per hour.

The six years leading up to the speed limit change, there were 227 fatalities recorded by the Iowa Department of Transportation. Once the speed limit increased, the number of traffic-related fatalities began to rise. From 2005-2011 there were 250 individuals killed on rural highways in the state.

The speed limit is believed to play a large factor in this increase due to the fact the overall traffic deaths in Iowa has declined in recent years. Higher speed limits are associated with speeding vehicles, reckless driving, and speed-related car accidents.
