Two Iowa bars face lawsuits for over-serving
Two businesses in Iowa that serve alcoholic drinks are facing lawsuits in connection to the motorcycle crash last year that left Kathlyn Leekley dead and seriously injured Derek Lee Martie, the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reported on May 23.
According to the lawsuits filed by Leekley’s family and Martie last April, Heartland Acres Agribition Center and Bucketz Bar & Grill served pickup truck driver Bryan Cornwell, 22, until he was extremely drunk. Cornwell, who had an alcohol content of 0.214 an hour after the accident, reportedly crossed a median line on Dubuque Road and crashed into the motorcycle occupied by Martie and Leekley. Leekley was thrown from the motorcycle and died days later. Martie sustained life-threatening injuries and is permanently damaged from the incident. Appropriate charges were filed against Cornwell, who was given a 32-year sentence last March.
