Boating fatalities high in Iowa
July and August are the most dangerous months to be boating in the state of Iowa. In previous years during these months, the number of boating accidents involving alcohol has been high, leading to multiple fatalities.
This year, there have already been seven boating fatalities in Iowa. This is the largest number of boating deaths since 2007, when there were nine fatalities for the entire boating season.
Boating under the influence of alcohol can result in serious injuries; thus, 22 arrests have already been made this year regarding this charge. A 2011 law changed the legal blood alcohol limit of an individual operating a boat from 0.10 to 0.08, which is the blood alcohol concentration limit for driving a motor vehicle.
