Twitter being used by USDA to announce recalls

The Department of Agriculture is now using Twitter in order to announce product recalls so that consumers can learn of them as quickly as possible.

As of now, there is a general USDA Twitter feed that announces general information, but a recent announcement says that state specific Twitter feeds will now be created.

Now food safety alerts will be tweeted out in order to inform residents about egg, meat and poultry products that are not safe.

Officials are hoping that this technique will help inform people who may be affected by recalls because it usually varies per state. The USDA will also send out information on how to protect food in cases of serious weather.
