University of Iowa medical malpractice lawsuits settled
Two medical malpractice lawsuits have been settled against the University of Iowa Hospitals after initially being filed in 2004.
The first malpractice settlement is for $300,000 and will be awarded to an Iowa woman who claimed an anesthesiologist dispensed pain relief in a careless way. The family of the second recipient will receive between $65,000 and $91,000 in their settlement. The hospital was accused of neglectful treatment during a complicated surgery. The former patient passed away due to infections resulting from the negligence.
Both of the medical malpractice lawsuits were filed in 2007 and the hospitals claimed they did nothing wrong.
To date this year, the state of Iowa has paid $2.4 million in medical malpractice lawsuits.
