Three Iowa nursing homes fined

Three nursing homes in Iowa were fined for various violations, including verbally abusing patients.

One home in Dallas County was fined $2,000 for verbal abuse and a new administrator was brought in. Another violation occurred when an 85-year-old man was found in distress, unresponsive and frothing at the mouth and the suctioning machine that would have helped him was not plugged in and suction was not available. The resident did not survive because of this mistake.

The director of another nursing home was fired for threatening seven employees by telling them they would be fired if they reported concerns to inspectors. The final nursing home was fined for demoting the administrator after she faxed a list of complaints to state inspectors.

Man dies in car vs. truck collision

An accident in Iowa City between a car and a truck took the life of an 81-year-old man.

The 81-year-old man was driving in his car and struck the back of a semi-trailer on U.S. 61. The man was attempting to make a left turn into a private drive when he hit the Peterbilt semi-trailer. The man was then transported to the hospital where he later died of injuries suffered in the accident. The driver of the semi-trailer was injured in the accident.

Dubuque woman injured in a single-car accident

A Dubuque woman was injured in a single-car accident Monday. According to police reports, the accident occurred on U.S. 20 near Dubuque.

The woman apparently was traveling east when she lost control of his car, and it rolled into the media. When medical officials arrived, the man was taken to Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque for treatment.

Iowa man injured in Walmart parking lot

An Iowa man was injured when a car hit him in a Walmart parking lot. According to police reports, the man was hit while walking out of the store.

After being hit, the car sat on the man’s throat for 18 minutes. He was later taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently on life support.

Iowa boating accident delayed

The trial in a June boating accident case has been delayed. According to court reports, papers were filed Wednesday to delay the trial, and a new date has not been set.

The accident occurred on the Missouri River. The man operating the boat was allegedly drunk at the time and allegedly caused an accident that killed one and injured another.

Iowa State University student killed in crash

An accident in New Mexico on March 13 killed one Iowa State Student and seriously injured another.

Five students were riding in a car and heading westbound on Interstate 40 when the 18-year-old driver’s car drifted into the median. The driver then overcorrected his vehicle and lost control of the car. The vehicle then flipped over and four passengers were ejected from the car. One of the students was pronounced dead at the scene. The other students were taken to the hospital, three with minor injuries and one with critical injuries.

Graco recalls 1.2 million high chairs

Children’s products company Graco has announced that it is issuing a recall for its Harmony high chairs.

According to a company representative, these high chairs have been deemed unstable and may tip over while a child is seated. The front legs have structural issues that may cause them to come loose and separate from the rest of the high chair.

This recall covers the Harmony high chair model manufactured from 2003 to 2009, a total of 1.2 million chairs. A Graco spokesperson stated that the defective high chair has resulted in 24 reported injuries.

Two die in rollover crash

Two people died in a single-vehicle accident on Tuesday afternoon near Lyle.

The accident occurred around 2:08 p.m. on Hwy 218 south of Lyle, near the Minnesota border. The 79-year-old driver of the 2003 Cadillac lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road. The car drove into a ditch, hit a tree, and overturned in a small body of water near the highway. The driver and his 79-year-old passenger, residents of Osage, were killed.

Eighty-five-year-old woman killed in van accident

An 85-year-old woman was killed in an auto accident. According to police reports, the accident occurred in Conrad.

The woman was apparently driving east when she did not stop at a stop sign and hit a truck. While the truck driver was not injured in the accident, the woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later pronounced dead.

2 Injured in 4-Car Iowa Falls Crash

Two women were injured in a four-vehicle accident on Highway 65 in Iowa Falls Wednesday.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 40 year-old Carrie Luella Cooper and 62 year-old Julia Marie Stewart were taken to Ellsworth Community Hospital with undisclosed injuries shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say the accident occurred when two vehicles were stopped at in the southbound lanes of Highway 65 and a car driven by 35 year-old Kristine M. Stein of Geneva slammed into the rear of Stewart’s Plymouth Voyager van, forcing it into the rear of Cooper’s Chevy blazer.

Stein’s vehicle then collided with a car driven by 33 year-old Iowa Falls-resident Jennifer Lindaman.

Lindaman and Stein were not injured in the crash.
