Symptoms of PTSD
Researchers do not know why some accident survivors develop PTSD while others do not. It appears to be closely linked to many other factors, including the presence or absence of a reliable support network and the victim’s overall mental health. The symptoms of PTSD may become apparent soon after a trauma, or may not develop for several weeks or months.
The most common symptoms of this harmful disorder include:
- Strict avoidance of any things or places that remind the person of the trauma
- Flashbacks (reliving the memory and emotions of the trauma)
- Disassociation (emotional numbness in response to stress)
- Hyperarousal (feeling constantly tense, afraid, or angry)
- Depression (persistent feelings of guilt or hopelessness, loss of interest in activities, etc)
