An estimated 33,000 Americans suffer these injuries every year as a result of spills, insufficient storage, and even assault. Sadly, researchers estimate that about half of burn injuries could have been avoided by stricter adherence to safety policies.

Responding to a Chemical Burn
Caustic chemicals can cause severe damage to the skin very quickly; contact with them requires an immediate response. The injured person should be removed from the source of their injuries as quickly as possible so that the following steps can be taken:
- Clean the injured area. If the harmful substance is a liquid, wash it away with lots of clean water for at least 20 minutes. Is it is a powder, however, water may only spread it farther across the body. Carefully brush it off entirely before cleaning the area with water.
- Evaluate the injury. If it is minor (limited irritation of the skin and no severe pain), wrap it in a clean bandage and monitor for infection as it heals. If you are unsure of the injury’s severity, call 911 or Poison Control for further instructions.
- Symptoms of a serious injury that needs emergency treatment include: blisters, dizziness or disorientation, nausea, breathing difficulties, signs of shock.
People’s lives can be badly interrupted by the aftereffects of a chemical burn, such as treatment expenses, missed work, and lasting pain or disability. Our Iowa chemical burn attorneys work hard to win compensation for such losses for our clients.
